You can see and hear the steps in the video by clicking on this link.

Following are various definitions used in our calculations. The terms in the equations can be mixed and matched between the four sets.

1. Order divided by Stock equals Dispensed.

2. Prescription divided by Supply equals Given.

3. Desired Dose divided by Amount on Hand equals Provided.

4. Request divided by Available equals Prepared.

Next, let us go over two uncomplicated examples.

Patient #1.

A physician orders one gram of drug A for patient #1. You have in stock one gram per tablet of drug A. How many tablets should you dispense to patient #1? Take one gram and divide it by one gram per tablet. One gram divided by one gram per tablet can be written in a different but equal form. See the new form. One gram is the same as one gram over one. Dividing by one gram per tablet is the same as multiplying by one tablet over one gram. One gram in a numerator times one gram in a denominator cancels each other out. We are left with one tablet over one. One tablet over one is equal to one tablet.

Your answer is one tablet.

Patient #2.

The same physician orders two grams of drug A for patient #2. You have in stock one gram per tablet of drug A. How many tablets should you dispense to the patient #2? Take two grams and divide it by one gram per tablet. Two grams divided by one gram per tablet can be written in a different but equal form. See the new form. Two grams is the same as two grams over one. Dividing by one gram per tablet is the same as multiplying by one tablet over one gram. Grams in a numerator times gram in a denominator cancels each other out. We are left with two tablets over one. Two tablets over one is equal to two tablets.

Your answer is two tablets.
